Craftsman style homes emerged on the West Coast around the turn of the 20th century. Two architect brothers, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene, were inspired by the English Arts and Crafts movement and designed homes which incorporated wood-based elements and their own artistic flair. Consider a Craftsman Bungalow for your Kansas City Home This specific architectural trend, which took the country by storm from 1905 through the 1920s, is still evident in Kansas City home designs today. Elements of craftsman style homes include: - High level of architectural details outside with simple and spacious interior designs
- Low-slung roof lines with gabled roofs
- Porches – most craftsman bungalows have partial entryway porches at the least, or a porch which runs the length of the home
- Tapered columns – these are one of the most distinctive elements of a craftsman bungalow. Columns are wider at the bottom and taper upwards. They’re used to support the porch and are based on stone or brick piers which extend to the ground.
- Doors with paned windows in the upper-third of the door
- Multi-paned windows – usually the ratio is 4-over-1, or 6-over-1, double-hung windows.
- Earth-tones were frequently used to make bungalows blend into their environment
- Single-dormers for more space
- Wood clapboard or shingle siding with brick/stone accented bases.
