When a designer is forced to contradict his own design principles, that’s when you know the runway collection is going to be a knockout. Nicolas Ghesquiere has always been about discovering and defining the female body, but in Balenciaga Resort 2012, he seems to have surprised himself.

There’s a scene in Die Another Day where James Bond fights the villain the old-fashioned way: in a fencing duel. It involves all of the usual elements of the James Bond formula – a girl, a diamond, equal parts action and suspense, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil. That scene inspired Akin Abayomi to create Spy Game , a shoot he both styled and photographed.

“By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes.”

Fashion editorials are rarely intended to be the stuff of nightmares. But a few carefully applied smudges of white on some darkly-lit photographs make this particular shoot truly something wicked, and it’s a purposeful feat.
