Take notes if you need to—The dos and don'ts of a new season can be daunting, even threatening, to your overall mood and mindset. I have witnessed many clients hesitate upon the chance of expressing their true being for fear of The List.

No doubt you’re being bombarded with runway looks and fashion tips every time you’re in line at the grocery store. But keep in mind: Not every suggestion in a fashion magazine should be taken into your wardrobe. Trust me, I’m your style guru!

Ethnic-inspired: DON'T follow a trend too literally.

A particular style of “African Batik” might peak your interest at the department store, but how would it look in your closet? If your style is more prim-and-proper, you probably won’t wear much muslin or vivid, earthy patterns. Instead, do this spring’s tribal trends your way. Find accessories made of natural stones, or snag a pair of colorful, woven wedges that complement your already fabulous style.

Neon: DO take a risk with a new style concept.

Color is the perfect way to punch up a rainy spring day. The challenge for you is to add a little shock to your style without paralyzing it. Neon hues can lighten up your ensemble and your mood. Just remember, you are not a strobe light, so try one piece of vibrance at a time. If you are timid, go with a subtle change first—pastel nails, a bright statement necklace or a flashy clutch.

Prints and Patterns: DON'T go overboard.

Animal Prints. Cascading Florals. ’80s zig-zags. Metallic details. Remember that old saying, “Everything in moderation”? Play this little quote in your mind when you’re playing with patterns this spring. There’s lots of fun to be had, but check yourself. A well-tailored floral dress or a cheetah-print scarf will look great against solids. And with so many patterns trending this year, don’t forget to switch it up!

Fine Denim: DO invest in the basics that are most flattering for your silhouette.

I have one particular client that one day showed me a “NO-NO.” He had just made an investment to improve the appearance and tailoring of his wardrobe, then this happened: He held up the Costco jeans. Ladies, please, if you have only one pair of jeans in your closet, make certain that they are not generic to your silhouette. Spending just a little extra on high-quality denim or a great tailor will go a long way.
